We understand that taking part in a sail training voyage is expensive, and one of our core beliefs is in making sailing more accessible to all. Sadly, the usual cost of sailing on an ocean-going Tall Ship is high. Our voyages include all meals, provision of safety equipment and waterproofs. Participants need only to bring themselves, sensible clothing and toiletries.

We try to encourage participants to raise some of the voyage fee for themselves and there are a variety of ways in which they could do this. Some young people take part in sponsored activities, others manage to arrange for a local company to make a donation, or apply for funding from a local grant-giving body such as the Rotary Club. The ASTO Youth Committee have published a useful guide (info here) to fundraising which may help trainees in fundraising for their voyage.

We also receive funding from other organisations, other charities, and grant making bodies so that we may provide bursaries to future participants. Priority will be given to young people who may not have the opportunity to sail with us due to their personal circumstances.

We will never offer bursary funding to cover the full cost of a voyage. Applicants will need to demonstrate that they have personally made the effort to raise at least part of the voyage price through hard work or imagination.

If you think you might have a trainee eligible for bursary funding we’d like to help them as much as possible in finding funding for their voyage, please contact us for more information.
