There are many ways you could get involved with the Project from joining the sea staff (Afterguard), to helping with refits, or even fundraising. Whatever your contribution may be it is extremely valuable to us, we couldn't do the work we do without your help.
There are currently five ways to get involved:
- Becoming a Friend of Morvargh Sailing Project
- Friends has its own members and its own articles of association but it was created specifically to support the project - and for this we are hugely grateful. The friends work to raise funds to support young people who can then submit requests to them for help. The Friends committee reviews these proposals and supports those that best reflect their charitable objectives. Although in it's infancy it has great plans for the future and needs keen individuals to drive forward. We also give significant discounts to Friends members!
- Joining the Afterguard
- Afterguard are volunteers who have some sailing experience and have a real interest in the welfare of young people. They volunteer their time to sail onboard Helen Mary R and help the skipper to develop those in their watches. Full training is given and members of the Afterguard can progress through our rank structure all the way to Skipper.
- Joining the Refit team
- Helen Mary R undergoes a major refit every year from late November to February. The refit and maintenance is carried out almost entirely by volunteers. Most people come to the refit for a weekend or a few days but any help you could give is greatly appreciated.
- Becoming a fundraiser
- We are looking to establish a core fundraising team to help us reach our target of raising £75,000 per year. This could be by organising some small-scale local fundraising events, or if you are not confident about fundraising yourself, you can still help to create fundraising opportunities for others. For example, if you have connections with a local organisation such as a Rotary Club or sailing club, which might raise some money for us, you might be able to arrange an opportunity for someone from the Project to come and give a talk to the club.
- Oversight Board
- Applications are open for professionals to join our Oversight Board. As part of our ethos to create an organisation that is open and accountable we would like the Board to provide independent oversight of the project by looking at the following points:
- Monitoring we are meeting our CIC objectives
- Monitoring the quality of programmes provided
- Leading, running and monitoring the youth board
- Monitoring adherence to our safety management system
If you are interested in getting involved in any way please contact the office.
